At the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025, President Duma Boko unveiled plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into farming practices, enhancing efficiency and boosting yields across the country. Botswana is combining smart agriculture and cutting-edge technology to tackle food insecurity and drive economic growth.

“Smart agriculture powered by AI has the potential to revolutionise farming by optimising resource use, minimising waste and boosting productivity. We are actively engaging with AI companies here at the WEF to explore how this innovative approach can benefit our country,” explained Boko. This tech-forward approach will also create employment opportunities, particularly for young people and women, by equipping them with skills for high-demand agricultural technologies.

He further highlighted that the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) provides an unprecedented opportunity for Western countries and China to invest in Botswana and other African nations. By reducing trade barriers and fostering intra-African trade, the AfCFTA creates a favourable environment for foreign investment in agriculture and other sectors, unlocking new markets and driving economic growth across the continent.

Botswana’s smart agriculture strategy is part of a broader effort to diversify the economy beyond its traditional reliance on mining. By fostering innovation in farming, the country aims to strengthen food security and reduce dependence on imports. Investments in AI and renewable energy will further enhance productivity, allowing Botswana to establish itself as a regional leader in sustainable agriculture.

The government is also working to address challenges in infrastructure and energy access, deploying renewable energy solutions like mini-grids and solar farms to power rural communities. These projects will not only support agricultural activities but also create jobs and empower local economies.

“By leveraging technology and sustainability, we can create an inclusive economy that works for all,” concluded President Boko. Botswana’s approach to agriculture and innovation reflects a commitment to empowering its people and positioning the nation as a leader in Africa’s economic transformation.
