In a sign of deepening ties, Botswana and the idyllic archipelago of Seychelles pledged to boost cooperation in key areas like agriculture, education, and tourism.

The commitment came during a meeting between Chandapiwa Nteta, Botswana’s newly appointed High Commissioner, and Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan. Nteta used the occasion to request Seychelles’ backing on the world stage as Botswana grapples with the fallout of import restrictions placed on diamonds from Russia by the G7 nations. These restrictions, Botswana fears, could cripple its own ethical diamond trade.

The two countries boast a strong foundation for collaboration. A vibrant exchange program sees Seychellois teachers furthering their education at Botswana’s esteemed University, while Botswana has dispatched educators to share their knowledge in Seychelles’ schools.

“Botswana is eager to learn from Seychelles’ successful rehabilitation programs for substance abuse victims,” the Foreign Affairs Department revealed, “while Seychelles is keen to glean insights from Botswana’s agricultural expertise.”

Nteta’s itinerary also includes meetings with key figures like Education Minister Justin Valentin and Police Commissioner Ted Barbe, highlighting the breadth of this blossoming partnership.

The diplomatic ties binding Botswana and Seychelles stretch back to 1988, and this latest development signals a promising new chapter in their relationship.
