Young Botswanan Farmers Anticipate Agricultural Revival Under New Government

Young farmers in Botswana are optimistic that the newly elected government will prioritise the agriculture sector, which the diamond industry has long overshadowed. Tumelo Mapila, a vegetable farmer operating near Gaborone, is among those hopeful for change. Despite three years of dedication, Mapila struggles to market his produce beyond the capital.

Mapila emphasizes the need for broader market access and stable pricing to ensure better planning and growth for his farm. “Opportunities to access other markets beyond just Gaborone and Botswana are crucial,” he stated.

The previous administration, led by the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), is criticised for neglecting agriculture during its 58-year tenure, focusing instead on diamonds. However, the global downturn in diamond demand has highlighted the need for economic diversification.

Botswana, despite its wealth, faces a reduced economic growth forecast of just 1% for 2024. The recent elections, won by the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition under Duma Boko, centred on economic reform. Analysts stress the importance of diversifying the economy and encouraging financial institutions to invest in agriculture.

Political analyst Ramasia Kabo notes, “The agricultural sector is underfunded because banks and businesses do not see it as viable. We need to rethink our strategies to attract investment in agriculture.”

As Botswana looks to revive its economic growth, the focus must shift to sectors beyond diamonds, with agriculture poised as a key area for development.
