The Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) has secured a significant international breakthrough with the formal launch of its nano fertiliser programme in Botswana, an event presided over by Botswana’s President Duma Boko. This move not only marks a historic achievement for the Indian cooperative but also a major technological leap for Botswana’s farming sector, signalling a deepening of Indo-African agricultural ties.

The initiative, which introduces advanced nano-fertiliser technology specifically adapted to Botswana’s soil and climate, is a tripartite partnership between IFFCO, Botswana-based firm Lone Trends (also cited as Lone Threads), and the country’s National Agricultural Research and Development Institute (NARDI). By establishing local production capabilities, the venture is poised to improve cost-effectiveness and accessibility for local farmers. IFFCO Managing Director K J Patel commented on the development, calling the launch a “profound honour” and noting that it “reflects the growing role of nano-fertiliser technology in reshaping agriculture across continents.”

Officials project the new generation of nano fertilisers will offer efficient nutrient delivery even in smaller doses, which is expected to boost yields, significantly reduce reliance on chemical fertiliser imports, and strengthen food sovereignty in Botswana. Complementing the production rollout, the comprehensive plan includes farmer training to ensure proper adoption and uptake, underlining the country’s strategic commitment to building resilient and sustainable agriculture systems.

The Botswana project capitalises on IFFCO’s surging domestic momentum. The cooperative’s nano fertiliser business saw a robust performance in the financial year 2024–25, recording sales of 365.09 lakh bottles, a 47% year-on-year increase, primarily driven by strong demand for its liquid Nano Urea Plus and Nano DAP. To meet growing global and domestic needs, IFFCO has been rapidly expanding its capacity, with two recently commissioned plants in Uttar Pradesh, India, boosting total production capacity across its five nano-fertiliser units to 9.5 lakh bottles per day.

This international deployment aligns with larger national efforts in India promoting sustainable and efficient farming through technology. Domestic strategies include widespread awareness campaigns, subsidies—such as the 25% subsidy offered to farmers in selected “nano villages”—and the incorporation of agri-drones for precision spraying. For India’s cooperative movement, the Botswana launch serves as a potent example of its global export capacity, showcasing how collective action and innovative technology can achieve Sahkar Se Samriddhi or “prosperity through cooperation,” solidifying IFFCO’s standing as a major global contributor to GDP per capita.
