Botswana is seeking a stronger partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to address the growing challenges posed by climate change, particularly in the agricultural sector. During a recent meeting at FAO headquarters, Honourable Edwin G. Dikoloti, Assistant Minister for Lands and Agriculture of Botswana, engaged in discussions with the FAO Director-General, highlighting the nation’s pressing needs.

Despite its status as an upper middle-income country, Botswana, being a landlocked developing nation, is grappling with the severe consequences of the climate crisis. Minister Dikoloti emphasized the need for a bolstered FAO presence within the country to facilitate and expand joint projects aimed at mitigating these impacts.

“We have been hit hard by the impacts of the climate crisis and are facing immense challenges,” the Assistant Minister stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

A key focus of the discussions was Botswana’s interest in joining the FAO’s One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative. The nation is considering potatoes and tomatoes as priority products, aiming to enhance their value chains and bolster food security. The FAO Director-General reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to providing comprehensive technical assistance in this endeavor.

Furthermore, the Director-General encouraged Botswana to continue its leadership in implementing the One Health approach, particularly within the livestock sector. This approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, is seen as crucial for addressing regional challenges and fostering sustainable development.

Botswana’s proactive engagement with the FAO reflects its determination to navigate the complexities of climate change and strengthen its agricultural sector. The nation’s pursuit of enhanced collaboration and innovative initiatives signals a commitment to building resilience and ensuring food security for its citizens.
