GABORONE – In a strategic move to bolster agricultural productivity and environmental resilience, Botswana’s rangeland restoration teams have completed an intensive training circuit at the Africa Centre for Holistic Management (ACHM) in Zimbabwe. The initiative, spearheaded by the FAO-supported Drylands Sustainable Landscapes Integrated Programme (DSL-IP), marks a significant shift toward “livestock-led” ecological recovery, aiming to rehabilitate the degraded Miombo–Mopane landscapes that underpin the region’s rural economy.
The programme, funded through the Global Environment Facility (GEF-7), specifically targets the Tutume–Mosetse and Chobe sub-basins, where climate variability has increasingly squeezed grazing capacity. By deploying movable livestock bomas—temporary kraals shifted weekly to concentrate natural fertilization and soil trampling—the initiative seeks to reverse erosion and stimulate the regrowth of high-value grasses. This circular approach to land management is being positioned not just as an environmental fix, but as a commercial necessity for a livestock sector grappling with diminishing returns on degraded soil.
Participants at the Hwange session explored the technical nuances of “bunched herding” and integrated landscape planning to ensure that commercial cattle rearing can coexist with local wildlife. For many practitioners, the visual evidence of recovered Mopane woodlands in Zimbabwe provided a compelling business case for change. “Seeing how bunched herding, dung, and simple movements can restore bare soil has completely changed my understanding,” noted Ruth Mangisi, a farmer from Chobe. “I am going home with new hope and practical skills that I believe will transform our rangelands.”
Beyond the physical movement of herds, the training emphasized the importance of data-driven adaptive management. Extension officers were equipped with grazing charts and paddock assessment tools to monitor vegetation recovery in real-time, bridging the gap between traditional indigenous knowledge and modern ecological science. This professionalization of rangeland management is expected to provide a more stable foundation for the family-farming sector, which often lacks the capital for industrial-scale interventions but possesses the labor necessary for coordinated herding.
The success of the programme hinges on the ability of government extension officers to translate these field observations into scalable local policies. Tsietso Batlhokile, an extension officer from Tutume, highlighted the shift from theory to tangible application. “We teach communities about grazing practices, but seeing holistic management in action has given me a deeper understanding of how livestock can be used as a restoration tool,” Batlhokile explained. “The practical demonstrations, grazing charts, and herding techniques will allow me to support farmers with solutions that truly work on the ground.”
As Botswana continues to pursue its sustainable land management goals, the integration of women and youth into these new ecological value chains remains a priority for the DSL-IP. By transforming degraded communal lands into productive assets, the programme aims to improve livestock productivity and ecosystem health simultaneously. This holistic model offers a blueprint for dryland resilience that, if successfully scaled, could redefine the economic trajectory of Botswana’s central and northern agricultural corridors.
